At the Arizona Desert Country Music Association (AZDCMA), we believe that the strength of Arizona’s country music scene comes from the partnership between touring artists and the local venues that welcome them. When artists from across the country roll into town, they bring new sounds, new stories, and new fans — and in return, Arizona shows them the heart of our thriving country music community.
One of the venues helping make that happen is a true Phoenix original.
In the heart of Phoenix sits one of the Valley’s most beloved live music hangouts — The Dirty Drummer.
Originally opened in 1975 by Frank “Drummer” Armstrong and Dave Werner, The Dirty Drummer quickly became a Phoenix institution known as a true “eatin’ and drinkin’ place.” Over the years the brand expanded to multiple locations around the Valley, becoming a staple of the local nightlife and music scene.
Today, the historic venue on 44th Street carries on that legacy. Reopened in 2019 by Armstrong’s daughter Dana and her partners, the bar maintains its classic dive-bar charm while continuing to host live music, community events, and traveling performers passing through Arizona.
What makes venues like The Dirty Drummer special is their authenticity. It’s the kind of place where musicians feel comfortable, fans feel welcome, and the music feels real. Whether it’s a full band on a Saturday night, a songwriter showcase, or an outlaw country brunch, the venue continues to provide a stage for both Arizona artists and touring acts alike.
And when those touring artists arrive, Arizona fans show up.
Artists like Willy Tea Taylor represent the spirit of the traveling troubadour that has always been at the heart of country and Americana music.
Raised in Oakdale, California — known as the “Cowboy Capital of the World” — Taylor grew up surrounded by ranch life, horses, and the culture that continues to influence his songwriting today.
His music blends folk, Americana, and country storytelling, with lyrics that explore life, family, hardship, and the beauty of everyday moments. Known for writing songs that tackle profound subjects in simple and powerful ways, Taylor has built a devoted following among fans who appreciate authentic, story-driven music.
Over the years, he has toured extensively with his band The Fellership, performing across the country and bringing his distinctive sound to audiences far beyond his California roots.
And when artists like Willy Tea Taylor stop in Arizona, it’s the local venues that make those moments possible.
Taylor performs Wednesday, March 11 at 8:00 PM in the Pac West room at The Dirty Drummer, giving Arizona fans the opportunity to experience one of the most authentic voices in modern Americana music in an intimate setting. The show features a $10 cover and welcomes fans into the kind of close-up listening room environment that perfectly fits Taylor’s heartfelt songwriting style.
At AZDCMA, we believe Arizona’s country music ecosystem thrives because of collaboration — not competition.
Touring artists introduce new audiences to our venues.
Local artists open shows and share the stage.
Fans discover new music while supporting the artists they already love.
It’s a cycle that strengthens the entire scene.
When a traveling artist performs in Arizona:
• Local musicians gain exposure to new audiences
• Venues strengthen their reputation as music destinations
• Fans experience new artists they might not have discovered otherwise
• Arizona’s music scene grows stronger
Just as importantly, many touring artists leave Arizona with a newfound appreciation for the talent and community that exists here.
Behind every great show is a venue willing to invest in live music.
Places like The Dirty Drummer – Phoenix
…and many more across the state.
These businesses take the risk of booking artists, promoting shows, and creating spaces where music can thrive. Without them, the country music community in Arizona simply wouldn’t exist the way it does today.
That’s why AZDCMA proudly supports the venues, bars, restaurants, and music halls that continue to give artists — both traveling and local — a place to play.
For artists traveling the highways of America, Arizona has become more than just another tour stop.
It’s a place where:
Whether it’s a legendary Phoenix bar like The Dirty Drummer, a festival stage, or a songwriter night at a local venue, Arizona continues to welcome artists from across the country with open arms.
And at AZDCMA, we’re proud to be part of the movement helping this scene grow — one song, one stage, and one show at a time.
